Completion of Financing for Domestic Unused Biomass Power Plant

May 30, 2024

GI Capital Management Ltd. has established Aso Biomass GK to carry out a project constructing a biomass power plant in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, utilizing domestic unused wood resources as fuel. The project secured financing through project finance from local banks, along with equity contributions from energy companies, real estate firms, operating companies, and institutional investors who support renewable energy expansion and regional revitalization.

The plant will have a capacity of 900 kW and will employ gasification power generation equipment supplied by Austria’s URBAS. Beyond power generation, the project will explore business expansion and diversification through the effective use of by-products such as biochar and agricultural applications of thermal energy, contributing to local employment. Under the concept of “local production and consumption of energy,” the facility is also expected to serve as a backup power source in the event of disasters.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in June 2024, and completion is scheduled for the fall of 2025.
